The Call to Save the Student Health Center
by Jordana Lopez da Silva
Issue date: 3/1/10 Section: Student Life
If the petition to raise the Health Center fee does not pass, however, then not only will physician hours be cut, but so will Gardasil vaccines, workshops about relationships, date rape and sexual health issues, and students' access to affordable antibiotics, birth control pills, Plan B, immunizations, pap smears, breast exams, and annual physicals/check ups would become increasingly difficult to schedule. In general, the hours of operation for the Health Center will be decreased.
"We're asking students to be altruistic," said Greenberg, "30% of our students don't have health insurance, so we're asking all students to pay $5 more a semester for the greater good." Currently, the Health Center serves over 50% of the Lehman community, and is the only other CUNY besides Brooklyn College that has a comprehensive health center.
Few students are aware of the quality health care that they can access right on campus, even if they already have health insurance. "Had I known that I could book an appointment with the gynecologist and be seen within the next few days, I would have done so rather than waited two months to see one at a private clinic," said junior Cristina Sanchez.
Indeed, the Health Center is one of Lehman's many gems, and students need to decide whether or not they can sacrifice one trip to McDonalds a semester in order to maintain health care services that most of the country is not fortunate enough to access. If students wish to sign the petition, they can stop by the center located in Room 118 in the T-3 building, from Monday-Friday and ask the front desk for the form.
