As you may have noticed, this academic year has been different than most. Everywhere you go it seems like people are talking about the seasonal flu, H1N1 (swine flu), and how to stay healthy. With these new flu-related concerns, and directives to go to the Emergency Room if you have acute symptoms, those without health insurance are likely to become even more anxious. Uninsured students may wonder how they're supposed to pay for emergency services they receive in the E.R., and how to obtain quality medical care should they need it.
As a Lehman student, you're in luck! The Student Health Center isn't just here to provide care if you're sick and without medical insurance; we want to help you get health insurance so that you can gain access to medication, Emergency Room services, and a Primary Care Practitioner.
Every Monday, starting February 1, 2010 from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, a health insurance advisor will be available at the Student Health Center, Building T-3, Room 118. This representative, from Morris Heights Health Center in the Bronx, provides health insurance advisement to students, faculty and staff who reside in the Bronx, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island. Once each month, also on Mondays, a health insurance advisor from Westchester will come to the Student Health Center to advise members of the Lehman College community who reside in Westchester County. Our advisors are especially knowledgeable about Family Health Plus medical insurance. Family Health Plus is a state-funded health insurance program that is free for those who meet the eligibility criteria. In order to be eligible for this type of health insurance you must:
• Be a resident of New York State
• Be a United States citizen or permanent resident
• Earn less than $900 a month
If you meet these criteria, visit our website: www.lehman.edu/studenthealth and click on the "Get Health Insurance" tab to access the checklist of documentation you must bring with you when you meet with the health insurance advisor. If you don't meet the above criteria, the health insurance advisor may still be able to help you access a health insurance plan that meets your needs and works within your budget. If you are interested in learning more about this health insurance program, please call the following health insurance advisors in your county for more information.
