Issue date: 3/1/10 Section: Arts & Entertainment
In the wake of the earthquake that left devastation and heartache in Haiti, many artists have used their star power to help the victims through fundraisers and telethons.
The tragedy in Haiti has been an inspiration for music artists, and the new CD "Benefit for Haiti Disaster Fund: Everyone Hurts," is a result of this. Everyone Hurts is a one track CD starring the biggest acts like Leona Lewis, Robbie Williams, Susan Boyle, Mariah Carey, James Blunt, Miley Cyrus, Kylie Minogue and Mika. The project was put together by mega producer and American Idol judge Simon Cowell.
"Everybody Hurts" is a remake of the 1992 classic originally sung by R.E.M. off their eighth studio album Automatic For the People. The song is a good show of organized production. Although this version has a faster tempo, it still has the same soft timbre from the R.E.M version, which is helpful when highlighting the turmoil and suffering of the orphaned and homeless in Haiti.
The song is a powerful song, especially when all the artists come together in a powerful and commanding finale. It shows a lot of points of strength that the R.E.M version doesn't have, and is a good contemporary remake of the original. All the artist have brought their unique skills to this song: Mariah's distinctive high notes, Leona's warm and gentle choral, and Blunt's characteristic voice all add up to a great remake.
After a week of playing on the BBC Radio, the track went straight to number one. The song is an amazing and miraculous single with the talent to support it. "Everybody Hurts" provides the feelings of hope and optimism about the future in Haiti.
