Lehman has become more involved in the effort in to create a more sustainable environment. According to a recently released document, "Lehman College Performance Goals and Targets," on the Lehman website, one of Lehman's goals is the development of a Sustainability Council. "Lehman College has a functioning campus Sustainability Council. The campus sustainability plan will be submitted according to the schedule in January 2010."
With films like "An Inconvenient Truth," and "The Age of Stupid," we can't help but feel threatened by the impending destruction of the home we have, Earth. Jonathon Rosario, a sophomore says, "I wish I knew more of what I can do to really help the environment. I mean, I feel like I am doing all I can as it is and still I feel like it's still not enough."
Like Jonathon, so many wish they could do more and Lehman has been doing its part in sustainability efforts. In 2008 Lehman won the sustainability award. Now it's up to the students to continue to do their part. There are plenty of ways to begin reducing our own carbon footprints, while saving some real green. It just takes a few simple adjustments in our daily lives.
1. Turn off all your electronics when they are not being used and unplug those that you barely use. That includes electronics, appliances, etc. Turning off these things helps you save money in the long run. An appliance that is plugged in, but is not being used, can also pull energy, costing hundreds every year.
2. Replace your old appliances with new Energy Star appliances which work with minimal energy use. Also if you're making new purchases, look for the Energy Star label.
3. Replace regular light bulbs with energy saving bulbs. They give off the same light using less energy.
4. Take the bus, carpool, or ride a bike to school or work. These methods of transportation save on carbon emissions that create lethal greenhouse gases.
5. Use cloth tote bags to carry all your groceries instead of paper or plastic.
6.Recycle, Recycle, Recycle. Recycling plastic and paper, helps reduce the amount of waste produced each year. You can save a tree by recycling old paperwork, schoolwork, bills, and other paper.
7.Do all your transactions online, it can save tons of paper every year.
