Two years ago Lehman College conducted a self study, appraising all programs and procedures that compose an institution of higher learning and was accredited by The Middle States Association as a good college in excellent academic standing. The Middles States Association seeks to define, maintain, and promote educational excellence across institutions with diverse missions, student populations, and resources. Colleges that receive accreditation from the Middle States Association are considered to follow a high standard of educational implementation, which benefits both faculty and students. Every two years Lehman has to undergo an evaluation for the Middle States Association. Next year another evaluation will be completed, but not without rigorous work from the administration.

At the undergraduate level, Lehman's curriculum is designed to prepare students for their respective fields of study by providing a broad knowledge of not only what applies to their major, but also courses like mathematics, writing, foreign languages, natural sciences, and a core curriculum of classes from different areas of study. At the graduate level Lehman provides the same excellence as it furthers the student's knowledge in professional programs.

Lehman's mission, according to the Self Study Design, submitted to The Middle States Association is "to serve the Bronx and surrounding region as an intellectual, economic, and cultural center. Lehman College provides undergraduate and graduate studies in the liberal arts and sciences and professional education within a dynamic research environment, while embracing diversity and actively engaging students in their academic, personal, and professional development."

Accreditation by the Middle States Association is important for a school of higher education. The main purpose of the accreditation process is to improve the quality of education for all students. In order to do so, each school conducts a comprehensive self-evaluation.
