The age of social networking sites, text messaging, and blogging has changed the way we communicate. Networking sites like Facebook, Myspace, Hi5, and others have become such a sensation that millions of people use them to find old high school and college classmates or even loved ones. It has changed the way we keep in touch and make new friends.

The newest sensation to overrun the web is Twitter. Twitter is a micro-blogging and social-networking site that has the potential to change the face of journalism. It has become the medium of choice in the instantaneous news circle to get breaking news and information, which in turn has gotten the traditional news media fearing for the worst. In the age of Twitter and other similar social networking sites, quotes, stories or updates can be accessed from these user driven sites instead of the traditional face-to-face type of interviews. Before reporters caught on, celebrities discarded their publicists and public relations firms in favor of this sensation. Audiences also benefit as breaking news get to them faster than ever before.

Colleges are now realizing the potential of these social networking and micro-blogging sites, and nowhere is it more apparent than in sports. St. Johns University has given out a credential to basketball writer Peter Robert Casey to report the scores of basketball games and to provide updates of all happenings with St. Johns Men's Basketball team using Twitter. He will be the school's first reporter to cover the team using this tool/medium.

Lehman is not immune to "Twittermania" since the Athletics department has been using this networking sensation to post the latest updates of each sport and keep the Lightning fans updated with their favorite teams, as well, as to give information about the athletes and also upcoming games and events. Lehman Athletics Director, Dr. Martin L. Zwiren, and Sports Information Director, Stephen Spagnoli, are using this tool to publicize and hopefully recruit more students to the program. They are also very excited about what Twitter can do for Lehman's Athletics program.
