The Edible Garden at the New York Botanical Garden can be summed up in one word, delicious! It's a great opportunity for adults and children to see where their everyday veggies come from and to learn how to grow them in their own back yard.

The Edible Garden has activities for everyone, from planting basics for children to cooking demonstrations for their parents. Four of the highlights of this exhibition are "Flower Power", at the Everett Children's Garden, Edible Evenings in the Garden," "Tropical Fruits, Roots and Shoots" at the Enid Haupt Conservatory and the "Farmers Market" at the Mosholu Park entrance of the Garden.

"Flower Power" in the Everett Children's Adventure Garden, is a whimsical display of vegetables from flower to fruit. This hands-on program teaches kids to plant beans and take them home, make pollinator puppets, and includes a plant-part scavenger hunt, all demonstrating the life cycle of a plant and the pollination process. It is the perfect activity to educate children on the origins of the food they eat and the important part nature plays in it.

During Edible Evenings, visitors indulge in the extended hours of the Edible Garden. Part of the featured attractions are celebrity and local chefs that prepare innovative cuisine in the Conservatory Kitchen and the popular Waterlily Concert until 9pm. Visitors can discover how to grow their own edible plants, chat informally with a Botanical Garden scientist, sample culinary delights, and discover the ins and outs of beer and winemaking.

The Haupt Conservatory becomes a lush forest presenting tropical edibles in elaborate displays. Everyday favorites such as coffee, coconut, and cinnamon grow alongside more exotic fare such as passion fruit, tamarind and açai.

Every Wednesday near Tulip Allee and every Saturday across the street from the Garden's Mosholu Gate entrance, through November 14, the popular Farmer's Market will return with the message "Sustaining Farms, Sustaining Nature, Sustaining You," providing affordable, locally grown produce and fresh, nutritious baked goods. The Farmers Market is presented through Greemarket, the largest and most successful open-air farmers market program in the country, connecting local farmers with city residents by delivering fresh healthy produce to all five boroughs. Greenmarket is a program of the Council on the Environment of NYC (CENYC), and a hands-on non-profit group that has been improving New York City's environment for over thirty years.

The Edible Garden at NYBG runs until September 13
