Filling the shoes of former Dominican Student Association presidents Michelle Collado and Alan Gonzalez is a big task, but sophomore Marlene Alba is up to it. Alba took over as president of Dominican Student Association (DSA) in September and her main concern has been to assure that the DSA continue to recruit new members in order to bring a new flavor to the association, as well as maintain the clubs status as one of the most popular on campus.

The DSA is a cultural and ethnic group where students gather and share cultural interests in a multicultural space where the members acknowledge the strength of unity and the struggle of their ancestors. But Alba does not consider the club solely an ethnic group. It's also for those interested in Dominican culture as well.

"People all over Lehman from various ethnic groups make outstanding members to the Dominican Student Association" said Alba. "The doors to DSA are always open to those who want to come in for the first time."

DSA remains one of the largest clubs on campus with more than 400 active members. Upon entering the DSA clubroom, the bright red, white, and blue colors of the Dominican flag decorate the space. Pictures and memorials of major role models from the Dominican Republic welcome visitors 'home.' Alba explained that a typical day in the DSA room includes discussing hot topics, watching movies, playing dominoes, or dancing the famous bachata or meringue. All are considered integral activities to the culture.

"I am glad we have finished our events early since usually we are known for rushing and not getting things done on time," said Alba.

In the past two months Alba and the DSA have had several events including a "Dance-a-thon" where they collected canned goods and raised money for the homeless. The DSA also participated in a community service event with the Lehman Health Center, took part in Walk for Breast Cancer and collaborated with CASA in the "Rock the Vote" event to raise awareness for voting. Alba is excited about celebrating of the Dominican Day of Independence with the club in February.

"I look forward to spending more semesters as the Dominican Student Association president, as long as the members from DSA allow it," said Alba.

"Somos una familia Dominicana unida," she remarked, which in English translates, "We are considered a united Dominican family."

Editors Note: The Dominican Student Association club is located in the Student Life Building room 211C. For anyone who wants to become a member, the Dominican Student Association will be recruiting again in mid-December in front of the Lehman bookstore. -m
