Issue date: 10/6/08 Section: Arts & Entertainment
Ross graduated from Queens College with a B.A. in theatre and has worked in many accomplished theatre companies, as well as a stint as the lighting technician at the famed Studio 54. He was an integral part of the JCT Department for over 27 years. He was skilled as a set designer, lighting designer, audio engineer, and an event and production manager. He also directed many Lehman Stages productions like "South Pacific," "Othello," "Our Lady of the Tortilla," "The Foreigner," and "The Crucible." He directed his last production, in March of this year. In addition to directing, Ross taught theatre courses on lighting design and stage management.
"With his teachings, he has instilled in me love and appreciation for art and theatre," said Tenille Kelly, a student of Ross.
Theatre major G.V Maldonaldo said that Ross also had an impact on her life.
"Ken was so much more than a teacher to me and to all the students," she said. "He was my mentor. He was another father figure, but most importantly he was my best friend. The Theatre Department will never be the same."
As a student and friend to Kenneth Ross, I wholeheartedly and genuinely pay respect to his diligence and integrity. He was undoubtedly a great mind, a great professor, but above all, a great man. If my words do not suffice in describing him, perhaps his own words will. He always said, "If you want to know me, meet me at Shea's."
