WHLC Saga Continues
To Be or NOT to Be Online

After three years of effort with his staff, Chad Scott, General Manager of WHLC Lehman College Radio, was able to get the radio station up and online, but only by way of a radio blog hosting site known as blogtalkradio.com. The administration has purchased the domain name "lehmancollegeradio.com", but since March, hasn't given its approval for the station to go online. With the help of assistant manager Chia Schomberg, Scott also assembled a manual of bylaws that governs the operation of the station, which has been approved by the administration. Having graduated last June, he now vows to stay on at the station until he sees the staff's dream of going online become a reality.
It was also hoped that a requested budget increase might assist in improving standards at the station, through $7000 added to their annual budget of $6000. The additional money was intended to purchase new audio equipment and software; video editing equipment; and a digital camera; thereby putting the new station on par with the standards of most college radio stations. The request was denied. Scott said he was informed that due to budget cuts across campus they did not have the money to spend on the station.
"They do not see the potential of the radio station and what it could do," claimed Scott. "It gives interns hands-on experience to carry on into the media and entertainment industry." Twenty people work at the station and there are currently six programs on the blog site with an additional six in development.
"The content [of the radio shows] is thought provoking and entertaining," said Scott.
"Relationship Talk Show," featuring Schomberg, is scintillating while staying within the confines of FCC regulations, a requirement of the station's newly established bylaws. The station hopes to develop more shows such as a round-table discussion of social issues for the student groups C.A.S.A. and Student Senate, fashioned after Sunday morning talk shows like "Meet the Press."
"A lot of people don't know we have a radio station. Our goal is to make a big statement that Lehman College churns out some of the most talented professionals to the work force," Scott stated. "Once the website is launched, that will help prove it to ourselves and to the administration."

Best of luck in trying to enter the 21st century! Doesn't seem like much has changed since I had a weekly show on WHLC 590AM from 1972-1975.

Thanks Milton, a lot of people had put in work into this station and at least we should show that all that hard work is not in vain. What we asking for is so common that it's a shame this had not been done years ago. (Continued…)
