Joseph Magdaleno, vice-president of Student Affairs, sent out an email to Lehman students last month, about potential student housing opportunities.

A three-story building on Bedford Park Boulevard is being considered to house approximately 22 students. If leased, this would be the first dormitory to be offered to Lehman's commuter students that is relatively close to campus. However, according to administration officials, it would require much more input from students before plans are finalized. The hope is to get enough response; address certain obstacles; and have the building ready by fall 2008.

"This is something that Lehman is looking into right now, but they haven't finalized anything yet," said Dominick Laperuta, director of Public Safety. "Until they get final feedback, it's just being considered."

City College offers housing to all CUNY students in The Towers, a residence hall on their campus at West 130th Street. The Towers houses approximately 600 students, and provides a variety of options, such as private or shared bedrooms, as well as apartments or suites. Though this would seem an ideal option for Lehman students, the application process is competitive, and many residents are from Manhattan based schools.

"A lot of [people who live in the dorms] go to John Jay, Hunter, and BMCC," said Jeremy Thaickal, a graduate student at City College and a resident at The Towers. "In the summer, we have people who go to other schools, like The New School, too."

Thaickal experienced one serious incident at The Towers, which draws attention to one of the many obstacles that will need to be addressed before any potential housing at Lehman is settled on.

"I was assaulted by a band of teenagers right outside the east entrance," said Thaickal, "and the security [inside The Towers] was oblivious. It was actually the [campus] patrol that showed up at the right time." Within minutes the New York City Police arrived.
