Sweaters are no longer the most dreaded gift to receive. Knitwear is one of the most sought after items this time of year, so why not incorporate them into your wardrobe?

Styles and Colors

When shopping for sweaters, there are a variety of styles and colors to choose from. Since the winter is all about layering, cardigans are must-haves. They can be layered over a lace camisole or sequin tank. The latest version of the basic cardigan is the oversized cardigan ("Boyfriend Sweater").

Hooded sweaters with kangaroo pockets are ideal for casual days. Sweater vests and shawls are another great option. You can wear them over a button down shirt or t-shirt. Puffed sleeves on a turtle neck sweater gives them a modern twist. The wrap sweater is form-fitting because it includes a self-tie. The poncho sweater is also versatile because it drapes over the shoulders and can be worn as a jacket.

The color is also important. Jewel tones like teal, magenta and red stand out. Think about the clothing in your wardrobe. You can match almost anything with candy-colored stripes. Draw attention to a solid colored sweater by accessorizing with ornate earrings and bracelets. Bold prints, graphics and patterns can be worn without frills.

Comfy Textiles

Not all sweaters have to be big and bulky. Consider the fabric. Wool can be itchy and irritating if you have sensitive skin. Try a blend of cotton, rayon, and nylon. You can't go wrong with a cashmere sweater: It's light-weight and smooth. Acrylic and mohair are also great alternatives.

Trendy Necklines

Necklines make each sweater look different. The most popular include v-necks, scoop necks, and turtle necks. Cowl necks look sophisticated. If you want to dress up any neckline, you can wear a strand of pearls or a matching scarf. Details like ribbons, beading, or rhinestones will help you take a sweater from the day into the night. Cable knits are also a great way to achieve a basic and classic look.

Be Creative, Fashionistas

Create the look you want. Consider wearing a cropped chunky knit with your favorite pair of jeans or striped sweater dress with tights and a pair of leather boots.

The perfect sweater will come in handy on those cold days, so get ready to bundle up in the best of this season's knitwear.
