Travis McCoy of Gym Class Heroes, a band that performed at last year's Woodies, are now nominated for the 2007 "Woodie of the Year."

The MTV Music Awards have the silver moon man, the Grammy Awards have the gold old-school record player, and the mtvU Woodie Awards have a large splinter-like trophy made entirely of wood. The mtvU Woodie Awards have returned and the voting ballots are now opened to college students.

The mtvU Woodie Awards are a yearly award show that are now in their forth year. The Woodies are the first and only award show honoring the music that college students love. The Woodies also give students an opportunity to work behind the scenes and meet their favorite artists.

Some of the nominees for this year include rehab-refusing newcomer Amy Winehouse. Winehouse and Lily Allen are competing for "Woodie of the Year."

"I would choose Amy Winehouse," said Lehman junior Darius Carter. "I think she should win 'Woodie of the Year' because her album is mellow and so cool."

Winehouse's album "Back to Black" was a top ten internet album for two weeks, according to Billboard.com. The knee-breaking band, The Shins, gained three nominations. Gym Class Heroes, and the group Justice, are also up for top awards.

The nu-metal band Linkin Park is a favorite among some Lehman students. Patrience Jones, a Lehman junior thinks that Linkin Park should win the "Good Woodie" award because she's a fan of their music. The award is given to the artists that created the greatest social impact.

"I think [that] Alicia Keys is okay, but I would pick Linkin Park for the award [because] I want to give them my support," said Lehman junior Gregory Johnson.

This year's nominees were chosen with a new nomination process that offers college radio DJs and writers from more than 500 online student newspapers the chance to submit ballots and help hand pick the nominees.

The Winners of the fourth annual mtvU Woodie Awards will be crowned at the Roseland Ballroom in Manhattan on November 8. The awards will premiere simultaneously on mtvU and mtvU.com on November 15 at 8p.m. An encore performance will follow on MTV2 on November 18 at 12:30a.m.
