The Meridian staff is proud to congratulate Alice Michelle Augustine, Editor-in-Chief, on her recent, outstanding achievement. Michelle was awarded a Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans.

Michelle interviewed along with eighty-four selected candidates to win the fellowship and she will join the class of 2006 this March. Upon entering graduate school, she will also enjoy an award of $20,000 for each of two years and payment of fifty percent of her tuition. To be considered a serious candidate, Michelle had to appear before a panel of distinguished New Americans and demonstrate not only her outstanding capabilities, but also "a commitment to the values expressed in the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights." Her aspirations for Law School will enhance her long-term goal of a life in international humanitarian work.

Already a Lehman Scholar, McNair Fellow and Jeanette K. Watson Fellow, Michelle has shown outstanding scholarship and leadership while obtaining a double major in English and Political Science. Michelle often tells her staff, "We are people of integrity and vision. We are to be vigilant about the needs of our student body and passionate in our pursuit of answers to the questions that arise." She has conveyed her personal standard of excellence to those of us at the newspaper. With the support of Professor Cheng (English) who became faculty advisor for the paper last year, she has revived the Meridian and inspired student writers, who are indebted to her for sharing her talent, values and vision.
