If your pockets haven't already felt the strain or you haven't received a letter of notification in the mail confirming it, the Board of Trustees of the City of New York (CUNY) approved fee and tuition increases for all undergraduate and graduate students this July. This past April, many students and faculty rallied together to fight against the tuition hike, but it seems it was to no avail. Although some may view this as defeat, the positive outlook can be viewed as this: the next tuition and fee increase will be met with an even greater majority of petitions, students, and faculty doing "everything in their power to keep tuition as low as possible."
Every year elections are held in Shuster Hall and whether you voted or not, there's a new student government officially running your Lehman campus affairs. Yaw Appiah, President of C.A.S.A. (Campus Association of Student Activities), a 24 year-old upper sophomore majoring in Chemistry with a Pre-Med minor, is enthusiastic about his new position. When asked what his immediate plans for C.A.S.A. would be Appiah said, "I plan to better unite the student body and keep them well informed about all activities taking place at Lehman College and CUNY, create a suggestion box for Lehman students, look out for all student clubs, and make sure everyone elected will be held accountable for their positions in the process." Appiah's first tip for the new school year: If you are having conflicting issues with a professor who's worked for Lehman for twenty years or more, try writing a letter to head of the department or CUNY and have them speak to the respective professor.
C.A.S.A. is comprised of a various positions which all have different representatives, aimed toward the same goal: to enhance the quality of student life and activities. Cyndia Montero, Club Board Vice President, is a lower junior with a Social Work major. When asked why she ran for the position she said, "To make students more active in the clubs." Racquel Terrelonge, Financial Planner, is an upper junior majoring in Economics and Business Management. "I ran for this position because I wanted to make a difference in the community and create a more informed student body," says Terrelonge. She also said, "I feel it's important that any student running for student government have some prior experience and knowledge of their position. I've been active in the student body for the past three years and have always been dissatisfied with how C.A.S.A. funds weren't distributed correctly. I chose this position because I know how to budget money." Dorothy Lewis, Campus Facilities Officer, earnestly stated that "a lot of things need to be done and I'm the person who will be on top of my game to get them done." Cesar Nina, Research Planner, without reservation also said, "I will fight for the rights of my fellow students, raise public awareness of on campus events, and create events that students are interested in." With tuition, student activities fees and student population going up, it seems like C.A.S.A. has a lot on their plates for the 2005-2006 school year.
Appiah, all other members of C.A.S.A. and all student club rooms are located in the Student Life Building (to left of Carman Hall on the south end of the playing field). You've seen it, rushed pass it on your way to class, and/or stared, but never dared to enter the inconspicuous building. You are openly invited to keep close tabs on C.A.S.A., join a club, write for Meridian (Lehman's newspaper), utilize the game room, the computer room, the information center, and lab tops, and/or meet new people in a more relaxed atmosphere. If interested, stop by and ask questions, get involved, and reap all the benefits of your activity fees. Please visit room 222 in the SLB or contact (718) 960-8535 for more information.
